LCV and CVPA hail VP Harris’ Pittsburgh visit to highlight historic federal water investments

In response to Vice President Harris’ visit to Pittsburgh to highlight historic federal clean water investments, Conservation Voters of Pennsylvania Executive Director Molly Parzen and League of Conservation Voters Deputy Legislative Director Madeleine Foote issued the following statements:

“We applaud the commitment of the Biden-Harris administration to address long standing environmental justice issues through their transformative bipartisan infrastructure law and federal climate plan,” said CVPA Executive Director Molly Parzen. “The federal funds Vice President Harris highlighted today will go a long way toward protecting the health and safety of Pittsburgh’s most vulnerable children by accelerating plans to remove all lead pipes from the city by 2026. Other federal investments will also provide environmental justice communities with tools to address flooding through the use of green infrastructure like tree planting, as well as improve water quality.

We look forward to working with our congressional delegation, Governor Shapiro and local officials to ensure that we fully leverage this historic opportunity to create union jobs while addressing environmental racism and improving the health and safety of all Pennsylvanians.”

“Clean water is a fundamental human right, but for too long, communities across the country, especially environmental justice communities, have had to worry if the water coming from their taps was jeopardizing the health of their families,” said LCV Deputy Legislative Director Madeleine Foote. “The Biden-Harris administration has led the largest investment ever in our country’s water infrastructure, and combined with new and updated regulatory safeguards, has demonstrated a tireless commitment to ensuring that everyone, no matter their race, zip code, or income, has access to the clean water they deserve.

In stark contrast with the Biden-Harris administration’s leadership, House Republicans in Congress are attempting to undermine the Clean Water Act and consistently prioritizing the profits of oil companies and other Big Polluters over protections for our clean water.”
