Equity Is An Environmental Issue: Why DEIJ Matters in Environmental and Conservation Work
“The environment is for everyone.” “We build the trail, and everyone is welcome to use it.”
While well-intentioned, these sentiments erase the lived experiences of marginalized communities and are found in far too many environmental and conservation spaces. The reality, however, is that our identities and lived experiences and how others interact with us have significant impacts on whether and how we relate to and within the environment; how we do or do not prioritize environmental and conversation policies; and whether we feel an organizational mission reflects us or an organization welcomes us. This workshop will demonstrate how and why DEIJ work is environmental work, and vice versa.

“But We Don’t Have the Resources...”: Moving DEIJ Forward Without Additional Funding or Staff
Environmental and conservation organizations are busy organizations! With the need to prioritize our organization’s mission and funding priorities, how do we find the time to dismantle white supremacy and center DEIJ when we are this stretched as it is? This workshop will offer concrete recommendations for how the environmental and conservation fields can and should integrate DEIJ practices into their day-to-day work with their existing funding and staffing resources.

For Board Members Only: Understanding the Board’s Roles and Responsibilities in DEIJ Work 
Typically (but not always!) the staff of an organization is farther along in their DEIJ journeys than their Boards of Directors. As the entity with the most power at a non-profit organization, the Board of Directors can make meaningful changes, both internally and externally, to ensure DEIJ best practices are woven throughout the mission, vision, values and day-to-day work. This workshop will offer peer-to-peer perspectives on what DEIJ looks like at the environmental and conservation organizational Board level, along with specific action steps for making sustainable changes and impact. This training is open only to people who serve as board members at organizations within the Delaware River Watershed.
